Will (Hugh Grant) lives off the royalties of a Christmas song written by his father in the 1950's.
Because of this, Will doesn't have to do anything and proudly lives his life as "an island" and breaks his days down
into "units" (exercise is two units, a bath one unit, etc.). But when Will meets Marcus, a boy with problems at home and
school, we have an inversion of the classic coming-of-age story. Instead of Will helping Marcus to grow, Marcus helps
Will overcome his Peter Pan complex.
The performances are first-rate; especially Grant's. It seems he does a better job with his hair out of his eyes.
"About a Boy" is one of the funniest comedies released last year.
The DVD extras include a making-of, deleted scenes and a commentary by directors Chris and Paul Weitz (who are,
surprisingly, the directors of "American Pie." Surprising, because as American as their sensibilities seemed in that
film, they seem just as British in this one). |
