The Bourne Identity [Universal]

Do you know what your children are watching?

By TERESSA ELLIOTT

It belongs to the wannabe genre: it wants to be a fast-paced, old-fashioned espionage thriller, but its modern sensibilities (and ours) keep it merely a mediocre entertainment.

Matt Damon is Jason Bourne (or is he?) -- a guy who doesn't know who he is, but knows how to disarm a man and escape an embassy building without breaking a sweat. The film details his quest to find out who he is and his desire to stay alive long enough to rediscover his life. Franka Potente is the token love interest (with zero chemistry with Damon) and Chris Cooper does a good job as the man who may or may not be Bourne's boss.

The main problem with the film is while Bourne doesn't know who he is, we do, and the reason given for his amnesia is fairly pat.

The major extras are an alternate ending, deleted scenes, a making-of featurette, a music video (by Moby) and feature commentary  director Doug Liman. With reports of on-set tension between the director and star, a commentary with Damon would have been interesting, but unfortunately isn't what we get.
