A Cinderella Story [Warner]

Do you know what your children are watching?

By ALEXIA ARGYROU

In the ongoing titanic battle between tween sensations Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan, I have no clear preference. But I was leaning toward Lohan, who I think is shaping up to be a pretty good actress, and against Duff who seems to be on the Disney channel every 5 minutes (at least when Raven-Symone is not on). I thought Duff was over-promoted and she got to be obnoxious.

But, you know what? She's quite likable in movies, and unlike Lohan, she can sing pretty well too. So, despite initial expectations I liked "A Cinderella Story." It's sweet enough and irreverent enough at the same time to appeal to those tweens who are awkwardly hovering between the kid movies they're watching and the teen ones they want to watch.

The story is a contemporary retelling of the classic fairytale story (with a little "The Shop Around the Corner" subplot thrown in to good effect) and set in a high school: A young woman (Duff) is left at the mercy of her evil stepmother and stepsisters after her father dies. Relegated to an attic room and ordered to do menial jobs, she eventually finds her prince -- who's the high school football star, a reluctant college football hopeful, the all-around most popular guy, but also a closet poet, a sensitive soul who wants to become a writer despite his father's wishes.

Extras include additional scenes, the requisite Hilary and Haylie Duff music video, a making-of featurette and a game. All in all, I recommend this flick.
