Looney Tunes Golden Collection [Warner]

The enervating zip and freshwater laughter -- what Manny Farber called "smart-alecky freshness" -- of the great, classic Warner Brothers cartoons of Chuck Jones, Fritz Freleng, Tex Avery, and Bob Clampett have been reborn on DVD in this 4-disc, 56 cartoon collection, with all the cartoons remastered and restored. Most of the classics are here -- "Rabbit Seasoning," "For Scent-imnetal Reasons," "Duck Amuck," "Duck Dodgers in the 24 ˝ Century" -- along with the audio commentary of numerous film historians and animators on specific cartoons, featurettes, excerpts for the primetime "Bugs Bunny Show," and production paraphernalia (stills, pencil tests, charts). Each disc concentrates on a specific cartoon character -- Bugs Bunny on Disc One, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig on Disc Two, and Disc Three and Four collecting other Warner Brothers characters and one-shot cartoons. For the novice, this collection is an excellent introduction to the Warner Brothers madhouse. For the cats in the know, however, there are a few quibbles. For example, why doesn't Daffy rate a disc of his own and...where the hell is "What's Opera Doc?" - PB
