Who
knew the realty business could be so deadly? It is
when you are selling a house to the mysterious Count
Orlok. This beautifully eerie film begins by setting
the tone with the following question: "Nosferatu --
Does not this word sound like the call of the death
bird at midnight?" No phony bats on strings here, this
original vision of terror still strikes a chord with
Max Schreck's frightening vampire and the film's
smooth special effects. F.W. Murnau's deliciously
horrific (and unauthorized) tale of Dracula, was
brought to the silent screen in 1922 and re-released
in 2001 on DVD through loving digital transfer by film
historian David Shepard. DVD extras include the
"Nosfera-tour," in which German silent film historian
Lokke Heiss provides an informative slide show with
recent pictures of film locales. Also included is an
effects explanation of the reversed film stock scene
when the carriage enters the castle's dark woods, a
photo gallery with notes, and optional scores. A must
for early cinema or horror movie buffs.
