Kramer vs. Kramer [0000]

Do you know what your children are watching?

By NICK ZEGARAC

A harried husband, Ted Kramer (Dustin Hoffman) finds out what it's like to raise his child, Billy (Justin Henry) as a single parent after his wife, Joanna (Meryl Streep) just packs up and walks out on their marriage.

Today, divorce stories are a dime a dozen but when "Kramer vs. Kramer" first hit the scene on the cusp of the 1980s it was a genuine revelation. And although the story has been told and retold countless times since, none of those subsequent efforts have quite captured the immediacy and sheer energy of this ground-breaking American classic. Jane Alexander costars as Margaret, Ted's compassionate friend and a single parent as well.

Columbia Tristar has given us the film in a pretty good-looking transfer. Yes, colors are dated but they are incredibly well balanced and, at times, even vibrant. There are some minor aliasing problems and fine details occasionally flicker, but nothing that will distract. The audio has been nicely restored. There's a documentary that's pretty informative, albeit short.
