A Man Apart [New Line]

Do you know what your children are watching?

By ETHAN CUHULINN

Vin Diesel stars as a DEA agent whose wife is murdered by drug dealers, after he puts away a Mexican kingpin. Grieving, angry, and not entirely lucid, he seeks revenge. But is the imprisoned kingpin who's behind it, or the mysterious Diablo, apparently an even more ruthless drug dealer who's attempting to take over the kingpin's territory?

I expected at least some satisfying action and violence levels from this admittedly modest feature (it barely made a splash, either critically or in terms of box-office, during its ho-hum theatrical release, despite the fact that Diesel is pretty hot right now). What I did not expect was a story with a couple of semi-intelligent twists. And Diesel does a pretty decent job acting as a man on the edge. Watch it, as long as you can get through the set-up (you know that when you see a loving couple dancing by a setting sun early on in a flick the wife is toast 10 minutes afterward) and a surprisingly flaccid ending with a message about choosing The Law over revenge (hey guys, it's a Vinmeister action flick, for chrissakes!).

Seven deleted scenes are the major extra feature. Some do add to the story, so I don't know why they were excised; and one is an extended version of an exotic dance, in case anybody likes this sort of thing. A trailer and promos for New Line's "Run Ronnie Run" and "Highwaymen" that run together are also included.
