Is there a more likable
movie couple than Diane Lane and John Cusack? And,
are they enough to elevate a romantic comedy to
something more than a tired retread of all the
themes that we expect from romantic comedies? Is
it more or less than "When Harry Met Sally"? Plus,
can anyone dislike any movie that has anything to
do with dogs? Read on...
Lane stars as Sarah, a woman who has recently gone
through divorce and is finding it hard to get back
to dating. Her family holds an intervention and
her oldest sister (Elizabeth Perkins) signs Sarah
up with an internet dating service, stating that
anyone responding "must love dogs" -- although
Sarah doesn't own a dog. After several odd and
uncomfortable dates, she takes a borrowed dog to a
park and meets a man (Cusack) who's also divorced
and finds dating awkward. Christopher Plummer,
Dermot Mulroney, Stockard Channing and Ali Hills
round up the cast.
There are few special features on the DVD: a few
deleted scenes with optional commentary by writer
and director Gary David Goldberg, a bloopers reel
and the trailer.
Well, the answers to the questions above are no,
no, less and yes. It is true that Lane and Cusack
are a great on-screen couple but the premise of
trying to start a relationship based on lies and
then messing it up and then not communicating with
each other to find out how you really feel leads
to little more than a series of frustrations.
But, the dog is really sweet. |
