Ringu [DreamWorks]

Do you know what your children are watching?

By TERESSA ELLIOTT

The recent supernatural thriller "The Ring" was based on the Japanese film "Ringu," which is now also on DVD.

Like with many foreign films on DVD, there aren't any noteworthy extras, but the film is still worth checking out if you want some sinister notions entering your dreams. And if you've already seen "The Ring," you'll be struck by how closely it hews to "Ringu," but the latter is more fascinating because of  glimpses into Japanese life, culture and sensibilities -- even simple things, like people taking off their shoes immediately upon entering a home, or scenes in a hostel where the guests seem to spend a lot of time in their rooms sitting and crawling because everything is so low.

"Ringu" also adds an extra eerie layer to the creep-out factor of "The Ring." Now, if you haven't seen either film, the plot goes thus: if you watch a special video, you get a phone call afterwards, telling you that you will die in seven days. A reporter watches the video and then begins investigating it, not only to solve the mystery, but to save her own life.

Bottom line, if you liked "The Ring," don't miss this one. It's subtler and there's still some creaking creepiness left in this story.
