An elegiac thriller, "Unfaithful" is an oxymoron. Instead of the fast pace of most thrillers, it
unwinds slowly with a minimum of dialogue. Most of the film is subtext and smoldering glances. That isn't all good,
however, as the film falls apart during a climactic moment and doesn't recover.
It is worth seeing, however, for Diane Lane's fearless performance and Richard Gere performing against type as a
betrayed, sweater-clad hubby. The extras are a big plus: from the commentary of both the director and actors, through
deleted scenes (also with director commentary), a making-of featurette, editing featurette and Charlie Rose interview
with the director and cast, the film becomes enhanced by the abundance of interesting extras and the comments within
them.
If only something could have been done about the central implausibility in the film. |
