Ah, to be giddy and love
struck in West Virginia. Such is the case for
young twenty-something Rosalee Futch ("Blue
Crush's" Kate Bosworth) -- with a moniker like
that, she deserves a little life jostling. Through
the help of friends, she enters and wins a contest
to fly to WV's antithesis – Hollywood -- in order
to attend a date a with her matinee idol, Tad
Hamilton.
What is refreshing in this well-traveled tale of
distraction in the midst of a love that was there
all along, is that Rosalee is not a naive bumpkin,
blindly falling for the first line Tad hands her.
Rattled initially by his stardom, she eventually
maintains composure and proves to be an eloquent
young woman with her feet firmly planted on the
ground. While Bosworth is charming and loveable,
Josh Duhamel (as said hunk) is slight and
two-dimensional, but such is his character.
Rosalee's Piggly Wiggly coworker and friend Cathy
("Mona Lisa's Smile's" Ginnifer Goodwin) provides
fleeting flashes of comedic delight.
Star of this ensemble is "That 70's Show's" Topher
Grace. Having proven his dramatic abilities in
"Traffic," Grace builds from his television
character's subtle straight man in order to create
Pete, the young man forever pining for his
Rosalee. Dependable yet awkward, he is the skinny
boy-next-door any girl would fall for without
realizing it.
A sweet and harmless story, director Robert
Luketic ("Legally Blonde") has brought together a
fun cast to portray it. DVD extras include deleted
scenes (including one of Paris Hilton attempting to
seduce Tad), a gag real, photo gallery, cast and
filmmaker info, extensive production notes, and
trailers. |
